Let’s be honest—no parent likes thinking about worst-case scenarios. We’re too busy juggling snacks, schedules, and the mystery of why our kids suddenly hate the food they loved yesterday. But there’s one to-do that really shouldn’t be pushed off:

Naming guardians for your children.

I know—it’s uncomfortable, maybe even a little scary. But it’s also one of the most loving gifts you can give your kids.

Why It Matters So Much

If you don’t choose someone, the courts will—and it may be someone that you don’t want raising your kids. That can lead to confusion, disagreements, and stress at the absolute worst time. Naming guardians gives your kids stability and ensures the people you trust are the ones stepping in.

How to Choose the Right Person

This part can feel overwhelming, but a few key questions make it easier:

• Will your kids stay together? Most parents want siblings to stay under the same roof. If that’s important to you, pick someone able to take them all.

• Do they share your values? Faith, morals, routines—choose someone aligned with what matters most to your family.

• Do they parent like you? Think about lifestyle, homeschooling vs. public school, structure vs. flexibility.

• Are they stable and willing? Age, energy, long-term stability—and yes, make sure they actually say yes to the role.

• Will your kids have to relocate? A move is okay, but worth factoring into your decision.

Good Enough Is a Good Start

Don’t wait for the “perfect” choice. Guardianship can always be updated. A solid decision today is far better than no decision at all.

Give Your Kids the Clarity They Deserve

Choosing a guardian isn’t about expecting the worst—it's about protecting your kids no matter what. It’s one of the simplest, strongest ways to make sure they’re cared for by the people you trust most.

One last point…

Before leaving a friend or family member with your children, consider the financial consequence and prepare ahead.  Watch for more on that in my next blog post!
